Pathophysiology ECG Workshop
On Saturday, October 26th, 2024, we organized the first Pathophysiology ECG Workshop of the Institute of Translational Medicine. It took place in three classrooms of the MediSkillsLab. The Workshop aimed at deepening the theoretical and practical knowledge of ECG analysis of third-year medical students. It also provided opportunity to register ECG recordings of volunteers and participants, thus gaining hands-on experience on the practice and pitfalls of ECG recording.

The official naming ceremony of the new theoretical and education block of the MS
The official naming ceremony of the new theoretical and education block of the Pécs Medical School was held on September 20; the ceremony also included the unveiling of a sculpture in memory of dr. Endre Grastyán, internationally acclaimed scientist and neurophysiologist, apropos of the 100th anniversary of his birth. The professor was the head of the Pécs Medical School Institute of Physiology and the Neurophysiology Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The faculty announced an anonymous competition last January for the creation of a sculpture worthy of the personality, scientific and educational activities of dr. Endre Grastyán.

Assembly of the Circle of Demonstrators
The general assembly of the Circle of Demonstrators was organized on 16th of April in person in the new campus of our faculty. All in all, more than 100 participants (mentor teachers, students and academic staff) took part in the event. The students who won the scholarship of the Circle of Demonstrators and the teachers with outstanding mentor work were granted awards. After the ceremony, the students and their mentors could converse during a small reception.

5th anniversary of the YourLife@ÁOK programme
The Medical School’s Dr. Romhányi György Aula was filled with cheerful, happy students on 8 April when the 5th anniversary of the YourLife@ÁOK programme was celebrated. Some were playing games, some were bustling about in front of the folding screens, and some were waiting for their healthy drink. To celebrate the anniversary, the YourLife team offered students and staff members various activities: a photo exhibition of the past five years, free delicious juices at the Smoothie Bar, exciting tasks, and the chance to share the experiences they gained from YourLife events. The informal get-together in the morning was concluded in the afternoon with a mini-symposium entitled “The first 5 years of YourLife”.

Demonstrator workshop
On 23 February, the Department of Languages for Biomedical Purposes and Communication organized the demonstrator workshop for the 5th time in cooperation with the Demonstrator Student Circle of the Medical School. Hungarian and international students and mentors working together in the development of medical language and communication skills traditionally hold their English language methodological programme in the first half of the spring semester, which provides an excellent opportunity for participants to renew their skills and improve their teaching.

Open day of the University of Pécs Medical School and Faculty of Pharmacy 2023
The almost 1200 participants interested the open day hosted by the University of Pécs Medical School and Faculty of Pharmacy filled the aula of the Old Main Building and the ultramodern lecture halls of the new building as well. The December 12 open day included professional lectures and interactive activities as well. The lecture of dr. Ádám Schlégl Pécs alumni, astronaut candidate, and orthopaedic-traumatology doctor was especially popular. He talked about the beauty of the medical profession and the challenges of astronaut training.

Anatomy Demonstrator Workshop
The 1st Anatomy Demonstrator Workshop was organized on the 13th of November, 2023. The main organizers were dr. Jason Sparks assistant professor, dr Andrea Tamas, associate professor, director of the Circle of Demonstrators, and Liliana Lucas, demonstrator student. The number of participants was 54 students and 18 faculty members from the Department of Anatomy. The language of the program was English, as many demonstrators from the English and German programs also participated.

Annual Conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE)
An 8-member delegation represented the University of Pécs Medical School at the annual conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) held in Iasi, Romania between 04.10.-07.10.2023. Leaders, coworkers and members of the Department of Anatomy, the Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre, the Circle of Demonstrators and the Romhányi György College for Advanced Studies participated in the meeting, where the main topic was ’The Digital Transformation for Healthcare Professions: Patient Care, Education and Research’.

Klára Orosz wins the sculpture competition in memory of Endre Grastyán
As it is known, the University of Pécs Medical School announced an anonymous competition in January 2023 for creating a sculpture that is a worthy remembrance of dr. Endre Grastány’s life, scientific and academic achievements with the titled “Creating a work of art for the namesake of the new theoretical block, dr. Endre Grastyán”. Professional sculptors with references in the field were eligible to apply. Dr. Endre Grastyán graduated from the University of Pécs, and led the Physiology Department until his death; he also led the Nerve Physiology Research Group of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The organisers of the competition looked for works that are inspiring, creative and attention-grabbing, and worthy of the mentality of Grastyán. 14 works were submitted, the results were announced on May 8.

Many people tried the DaVinci Xi surgical robot out in the aula of the Medical School
Between 4 and 6 May, the UP staff and students had the opportunity to take a closer look at the DaVinci Xi surgical robot, which was purchased last autumn and has since been performing surgeries, in the aula of the Medical School in Pécs. The equipment was surrounded by many young people on all three days; they could also try out how it worked.

Motivational Speech 2023 - Michael Tsokos
A needle couldn’t be dropped at the presentation of professor dr. Michael Tsokos forensic expert, medical director and celebrated true crime writer at the Pécs Medical School Aula on April 13. He was the invited speaker at the Motivational Speech organised by the English-German Student Council. Participants could learn about forensics through chilling crimes, acts of terrorism, war crimes, natural disasters and weird life events worthy of a crime novel during the 90-minute presentation, and also get to know the writing career and personal philosophy of dr. Tsokos.

Researcher's Night 2022
The Researcher’s Night is a free event series organised Europe-wide to promote science and research careers. This year, the last weekend of September allowed visitors to look into the secrets of various fields of science. At the Medical School, there were hundreds interested in new, colourful and exciting programs; all 79 programs were welcomed with enthusiasm.
All ages could find something for them: little ones could play in the popular Teddy Bear Hospital, and grownups could make discoveries in pharmacology, learn more about the cultural and scientific background of bones and skulls, paint brains, look behind the screen in emergency care, make tooth-coloured fillings, or they could even take part in body index measurements.
There were no programs without participants, and there were even some that barely had any space left for visitors.

Motivational Speech - Angel Giuffria
On 7 April, the English-German Student Council of the University of Pécs Medical School organized the Motivational Speech for the sixth time in the School’s history. This year's speaker was Angel Giuffria who is a model, actress, and dedicated advocate of people with disabilities. The motivational speaker, born without her left forearm, talked about what it was like to wear a myoelectric prosthesis for the first time as a few-month-old baby, how she experienced challenges, and how she turned them into advantages.

The closing event of the project of the UP 3D Center
In 2017, the University of Pécs and its consortium partner, the University of Debrecen, won HUF 1.85 billion in non-refundable EU funding in the frame of the GINOP-2.3.2-15-2016-00022 tender, titled “Establishment of an interdisciplinary research, education and development center at the University of Pécs using 3D printing and visualization technologies”, as part of the Széchenyi 2020 program. Due to this support, the UP 3D Printing and Visualisation Center has been opened on the campus of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, creating an exciting, open-minded, and efficient intellectual workshop in terms of equipment and relevant expertise.

6th DDK Workshop for Internal Medicine
On November 13, 2021, with the participation of 75 students and 25 demonstrator students, the DDK-Workshop for Internal Medicine was held for the sixth time. The main goal of the event was to provide as many students as possible the opportunity to practice the physical examination. The one-day event was available not only to third-year students but also to fourth year students, because many of them did not have the opportunity to practise the physical examination due to the online lessons last semesters.

Chill with the peers
The Peer Program in the UP MS Aula greeted Medical School students in Pécs with hot drinks, snacks, comfortable armchairs and beanbags. Students had the opportunity to talk to participants of the Peer Program, whose task is to provide support and advice to those in need. The beginning of pacemaker therapy
The first thirty years of pacemaker therapy in Pécs, the period from 1971 to 2001, are presented in the exhibition on the first-floor gallery of the theoretical building of our School. The exhibition opened on 13 September and can be visited until 31 December. Most of the material in the collection was collected by dr. László Melczer, associate professor at the Heart Institute, holder of a candidate degree, who has been implanting, programming the devices, and monitoring patients for 45 years.

The new education and research building of the University of Pécs Medical School (UM MS) was officially handed over on the morning of September 5. The building cost 14 billion HUF, and was funded by the Modern Cities Program.

The general assembly of the Circle of Demonstrators was organized online on 21 April using the videoconference app, “ZOOM” as a platform, -due to the pandemic situation. All in all, 112 participants (mentor teachers, students and academic staff) took part in the online event. On March 13 and 14, 2021, the DDK workshop for internal medicine took place for the fifth time in the Medical Simulation Education Center, MediSkillsLab. EGSC Rose Garden
Members of the English-German Student Council of the University of Pécs Medical School have planted their first rose garden in front of the Science Building.
The university’s Green Team helped the council members prepare the soil and plant the roses. As for roses, the students have gone for 60 multicoloured rose bushes representing the varied, multicultural student body of our university. The roses will bloom in spring and the students hope the doctors, staff members, students, patients of the neighbouring clinics will enjoy the sight.

Saturday Street Art
The entrance to the Medical School campus from Honvéd street has become dangerous due to the construction work in progress. We wish to divert the pedestrian and cyclist traffic to the sidewalk in front of the University Pharmacy. Within two weeks time the fence in Honvéd utca will be opened, the pedestrian and cyclist traffic will be diverted through this new entrance.

EN: Eating Disorders, Aoife Khan’s speech
As an extension of the World Mental Health Day upon the invitation of the EGSC Aoife Khan, our 4th-year student of General Medicine shared her story living with an Eating Disorder.
It has been stated by the British psychiatrist Dee Dawson that “one-third of sufferers fully recover, one-third live symptomless life with continued distorted thoughts, and finally, one-third never recover”.
Aoife was categorized as the one-third which will never recover from the illness, however she has learned the recovery was possible.

Department of Operational Medicine – CBRN optional course closing practice
During this semesters’ course closing field training of the Medical Aspects of CBRN Warfare optional course our students were able to test in practice the most important acute care inventions already introduced to them during the academic lectures. In accordance with the objective of the course the lecturers emphasized the most important knowledge of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazards) protection.
The event took place on November 4 at the Baranya County Disaster Management Directorate's special field on Árpádtető.

Intubation Course in the MediSkillsLab
In October, 2017 NMSA held a 3-days intubation course in the MediSkillsLab for norvegian medical students of the University of Pécs.
NMSA is the Norwegian Medical Students' Association, which is the student body of the Norwegian Medical Association (NMA). It was created in 2009 when the former medical student body of the NMA merged with the former IFMSA-Norway. NMSA is therefore an organization with roots in both NMA and the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA).
They work with national issues on how to improve the residential clinical training of graduated medical students and various aspects of their medical education.

EGSC Donation to the City Library
On September 21st EGSC donated a defibrillator to the City Library and Regional Centre for Learning. This donation happened in context of the International Evening 2017 and proved neccessary, because two students collapsed on the premises of the library in the last exam period. Thanks to the fast first aid of fellow medical students, both students, partly in critical condition, could be stabilized. This donation will give first aid helpers the right tool to react properly in future situations like this.
The board of EGSC would like to thank Márton Sziráki, 6-year medical student who is going to teach the staff of the library how to use the defibrillator.

EGSC donation to the Paediatric Clinic
The English-German Student Council donated body warmer equipment to the Paediatric Clinic on May 24. The equipment not only helps to maintain proper body temperature during prolonged surgeries, but also lowers the risk of decrease in body temperature allowing for a fast, constant and safe regulation of body temperature.

Professor Lord Robert Winston’s Visit at our Medical School
The professor of the Imperial College London, Professor Lord Robert Winston, who is also a member of the upper house of the British Parliament visited the Medical School of the University of Pécs on April 4th, 2017. He is a well-known public figure from the United Kingdom and has written several books in the scientific and popular science genres.
In the morning he had a meeting with the leadership of the Medical School, the professors researching artificial insemination and the members of the EGSC. Afterwards he visited the In Vitro Fertilisation Laboratory of the Department of Obstetrics.
He delivered his motivational speech entitled „Why bother with science?” at 7 o’clock in the evening in front of the students and employees of the Medical School.

Visit of the delegation from Iran
Staff members of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Iran, the rector of the Yazd University and staff members of the Iranian Consulate from Budapest visited our School on January 27. Discussions were lead on topics related to the recruitment of Iranian students applying to our Medicine and Pharmacy Programmes as well as other general cooperation issues, e.g. dual training and exchange programmes.
Members of the delegation were received by Dr. József Bódis, the rector of the University of Pécs and the leadership of the Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy. The guests had the opportunity to meet Iranian students studying at Pécs.

Advent concert
This year was the 8th Advent Concert at our faculty on the 7th of December in the Aula at 8 o’clock.
The free concerts were initiated in 2009 by students, and supported by the Dean's Office, HÖK and EGSC. Thanks to the rehearsals, and gatherings from more and more students and professors turned out that they excel outside of medicine in music, literature and dance. The concert has not lost its popularity although the performers change from year to year. Luckily as the number of the foreign students increase, so grows their number participating at the concerts.

Disaster Medic Instructor Training at the UPMS
A Disaster Medic Instructor training took place between 28th and 30th November at the UP MS. The one of a kind training has been organized the first time in it’s history by the Department of Operational Medicine, the MediSkillsLab, the Department of Anatomy an the UP MS Sports Facilities. The third step of this unique training structure trains the trainers - prepares the fire rescuers to deliver their already acquired knowledge during training sessions held by their own organizations.

CBRN field practice
A field practice had been jointly organized by the Dept. of Operational Medicine UPMS and the MediSkillsLab on last Sunday.
The practice was part of the Medical Aspects of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear) Warfare optional course and the participants could test their skills in CBRN detection and protection as well as in the transportation of the wounded.

Dance Group of Dankook University at UPMS
Following their huge success, the Dance Group of Dankook University of Korea revisited Pécs, UPMS on the 28th of September 2016.
This performance showed the various aspects of Korean traditional dance. Twenty-five dancers expressed the hope for peace and prosperity, the inner psyche of woman, shamanistic mind and the grace of Korean dance.

Among the main topics of the meeting were the development of the knowledge management portal www.operationalmedicine.eu and possible use of the Voluntary Military Service System in military health care.

Signing a Letter of Intent
A ceremonial signing of the Letter Of Intent between the Hungarian Prison Service represented by Lieutenant General András Csóti Director General and the University of Pécs represented by Attila Miseta Dean of the UPMS took place in 7th September.
The main goal of the agreement is the Medical School’s participation in the penitentiary training system of the HPS and to cooperate through common projects, conferences and networking.

Tactical Trauma Life Support (TTLS) Course
The Tactical Trauma Life Support (TTLS) Course has been organized for the second time between 22th and 24th of July. The event has been realized within the framework of the cooperation between the Department of Operational Medicine, the Dept. of Anaestehisology and Intensive Care, the PPA-International Medical and the Defex Hungary Ltd. During the intensive course the participants have learned the basics of the trauma care on the battlefield, which can also be well-used in civil life.
With the contribution of hyper realistic simulations real-life imitating stress situations were established, which had put the participants to the test throughout the training.

EGSC Donations to institutes
Representing the English-German Student Council, Amir Reza Ashraf English president and Lucas Wildenhayh German president handed over their donations on May 25, 2016. Two analytical and five tara scales were donated to the students and professors of the Faculty of Pharmacy, 16 phonendoscopes and 16 reflex hammers to the Institute of Physioplogy and to the Ophthalmology Clinic an automatic projector to measure visual acquity.
Students of the Dentistry major have also benefited from the donation: their work and education are supported by a newly bought articulator.

2nd Annual MEKTA - Combined Contest of the Hungarian Police Forces in Realistic Environment
This situational competition combined shooting and tactical action exercises. As well as last year, the medical attendance embedded in police tactical action was a special task. The team had to provide life-saving medical assistance to the injured person who was bleeding and under the influence of drugs while ensuring the safety and efficiency of the police measures. The professional conditions have been set up by Police Medic B-team and PPA International Medical.

Dr. Bennet Omalu was the first to discover some associations between the premature death of American Football players and chronic damages to their brain. He published his results in opposition to the National Football League, one of the most powerful and richest organizations of the world.
In his motivational speech he advised our students to stand up for their truth, not to be discouraged by anyone and to believe their faith.

Disaster Display
Police officers participating in the "Police Medic" Program proved their acquired knowledge within the framework of an impressive display which took place at an annual event organized by the UP MS Student Council. The major goal of the program „Police Medic” is preparing the police staff to recognize and abolish any life-threatening danger in situations require law enforcement dispatch. The structure of the program consists a theoretical and a practical training module followed by realistic situational exercises performed under both physical and mental stress.
The "Police Medic" Program is based on the agreement between the University of Pécs and the Hungarian Police Forces and involves the Department of Behavioural Sciences, the Department of Anathomy, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy and the Department of Operational Medicine.

Playground Handover at the Paediatrics Clinic
A new eco-playgroud -built from donations- opened in the garden of the Paediatrics Clinic. The handover ceremony took place on October 28, at 11.00.
Not only the children hospitalized at the Department of Oncology will be quick to take possession of the new playground but also those children who come for regular check-ups having received the active treatment.

International Evening
International Evening is an annual occasion organized by the
English-German Student Council (EGSC) and carried out, as well as enjoyed,
by 2000 international and Hungarian medical students of the Medical
Faculty of the University of Pécs.
Students represent their countries and cultures their fellow students and
to those from other faculties and even from other Universities of
Budapest, Szeged and Debrecen.

This year the Medical School Open Day for prospective students was
organized in a new framework. Besides the all-inclusive orientation the
participants had the opportunity to try themselves out in a wide range of
practical tasks (such as practicing sutures on pig legs, filling and
extracting teeth on dummies and making pills).
