Chamber award for the renovation of the southern park at the Medical School in Pécs
November 10, 2025
Architects Dr. Anna Mária Tamás and Dr. Krisztián Kovács-Andor, along with landscape architect Réka Tóth, received the “Forbát Alfréd– For Architecture” certificate of recognition from the Chamber of Architects of Southern Transdanubia for the renewal of the southern park of the University of Pécs Medical School. An exhibition related to the award can be viewed until 30 November at the UP Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.
According to an article on Epiteszforum.hu, this was the seventh year that the Chamber of Architects of Southern Transdanubia called for applications, and 12 valid applications had been submitted by the deadline on 30 September. The jury decided to present two Forbát Alfréd Architecture Awards and two certificates of recognition “For Architecture.” One of these certificates was awarded to Dr. Anna Mária Tamás, Dr. Krisztián Kovács-Andor, and Réka Tóth for their work on the 11,000-square-meter renewal of the southern park of the Medical School in Pécs.
According to the jury, the project stood out not only because it involved the design of a public space and park rather than a building, but also because it gave back a previously closed-off area to the citizens of Pécs.
“Through its direct gestures, the new park creates an elegant, human connection between the university buildings and the street. Its function is clearly reflected in the fact that the park simultaneously serves as a forecourt, a transition zone, and a place to rest. The designers skilfully defined the boundaries between main circulation routes and the actual recreational areas, clearly articulating the different functions. The subtle, hierarchical layout of pathways intentionally and brilliantly evokes the structure of neural networks. The high-quality surfaces, street furniture, and artworks all encourage city residents, passersby, and students alike to use the space—to stop, sit down, and rest in the park,” the jury’s statement read.
The related exhibition is open until 30 November at the UP Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, Building É81 (7624 Pécs, Boszorkány Street 2).
The renewal of the southern park of the UPMS was carried out in three phases, funded by the university with a total budget of HUF 927 million. The works began in the spring of 2024, and the park was officially inaugurated in May 2025. The project included the removal of the fence separating the campus from Szigeti street, the relocation of the existing parking area, the renovation of the green spaces, the creation of pedestrian walkways, and the installation of a new retaining wall featuring the inscription “University of Pécs Medical School” in Hungarian.
“We wanted to design a park that personifies the foreground of the vivid life going on in the aula for faculty life and is worthy of such a high prestige institution in both material use, infrastructure, and natural environment. It must be attractive and accessible, its functions should support all forms of social life, and the microclimate created by the flora should create a liveable and pleasant environment even in summer heat,” said Ders Csaba, chief university architect and urban planner, in a previous interview in connection with the park’s renewal.
