The University of Pécs has retained its position in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (WUR) for 2026, which compares nearly 2,200 universities from 115 countries.  UP tied for 5th place among the 12 Hungarian universities included in the comparison.

According to the rankings, the University of Pécs ranked between 1001 and 1200, making it the fifth strongest higher education institution, tied with another university, among Hungarian universities, as reported by pte.hu.

Higher education institutions are evaluated based on five indicators: education, research environment, research quality, industrial relations, and international orientation. The University of Pécs has improved in several areas compared to last year’s data, based on nearly twenty indicators from the five main criteria.

“The strongest pillar remains the quality of education. Regarding research, the strong growth in research productivity observed over the years continues, and at the same time, research quality has also improved, with all four indices that make up the latter showing improvement, i.e., citations, research capacity, research excellence, and the impact of research results,” said Dr. Dániel Kehl, teacher at the UP Faculty of Business and Economics, commenting on the latest results.

“Industrial relations also show increasing scores, especially in relation to patents. The traditionally strong internationalization indicators continue to demonstrate good international integration, and progress has also been made in the studying abroad indicator,” he added.

A total of 12 Hungarian universities made it onto the list this year. As revealed in an article on Eduline.hu, Semmelweis University achieved the best ranking, coming in at 251-300^th place this year. The second Hungarian university was Óbuda University, which ranked 601-800^th.
