The Medical School and the Faculty of Pharmacy in Pécs introduce the modern study app
February 7, 2025
The University of Pécs is introducing the Voovo study app to almost all its faculties; the idea of which came from a medical student in Pécs who, together with his peers, developed his idea into an intelligent learning platform. The invention is based on the principles of spaced repetition and active recall, offering a personalised learning solution for students and teachers alike. From 10 February, it can be used by medical and pharmacy students in Pécs.
Preparing for his anatomy exam, medical student Benedek Hermán thought that an app would be a good idea to make the learning of the course material easier. After he became the top of his class using this technique, he decided to develop his idea further to help others – this is how Voovo was born. He and his peers developed an intelligent learning platform that offers a personalised learning solution for students and teachers alike, based on the principles of spaced repetition and active recall, whether they are studying medicine, mathematics, or a foreign language. The app was developed in 2022, and today it has 20 thousand users, 15 percent of which are Hungarian.
“Voovo is not a substitute for lectures and quizzes, but a support for our students to learn more theoretical material effectively. It is a constant, playful reminder for students to repeat what they have learned. Users can also earn valuable bonuses, such as extra exam points, exemption from pre-exam tests, or some positive motivation offered by the teacher of the certain course. By introducing the app, we want to make student’s academic progression smoother and hope to reduce the drop-out rate,” said Tamás Fedeles, UP’s Vice-Rector for Education.
“We tested Voovo at other Hungarian universities last autumn and received very positive feedback. 92% of students used it daily, 91% reported better grades, and more than half of them started using the repetition and active recall methods in other courses as well. The University of Pécs is the most innovative university in Hungary because it introduces the Voovo Classroom university package into the educational portfolio at eight of its faculties,” said Benedek Hermán, the startup’s owner and creator of the app.
UP is launching the new service from 10 February at the Medical School, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts, and the Faculty of Sciences. From September, the Faculty of Law will also join the pilot programme.
