University of Pécs Medical School Representatives Deliver High-Quality Presentations at the AMSE Annual Conference
October 6, 2026
Faculty members and researchers from the University of Pécs Medical School once again played an active role in the annual conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), held in Vilnius from 10 to 12 September. Organised by the local medical faculty, the international meeting focused on current challenges in academic medicine and medical education.
During the three-day scientific programme, participants – including leaders, educators, researchers, healthcare professionals and students from medical schools across Europe and beyond – discussed the future of medical education, the relationship between research and patient care, the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies, personalised medicine, sustainability, and issues related to students’ mental health and well-being.
Educational innovations from the University of Pécs Medical School were also featured in the conference’s highlighted programme. Dr. Andrea Tamás, Professor at the Department of Anatomy, President of the Circle of Demonstrators and member of the AMSE Executive Board, delivered a presentation entitled “The Near-Peer Teaching Model of the University of Pécs Medical School.” Her presentation introduced the structured near-peer teaching system built on decades of institutional tradition and its integration into medical education. She also co-chaired the panel discussion “Working in Healthcare in Rural or Urban Areas: Where Will Your Future Career Take You?”, which explored future career pathways and employment opportunities for young physicians.
Representatives of the University of Pécs Medical School also contributed to the conference with a range of oral and poster presentations.
Dr. Orsolya Börner, Assistant Professor at the Department of Traumatology and Hand Surgery of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre, delivered an oral presentation entitled “Preparing Non-Ophthalmic Examiners for Bedside Vision Screening: A Competency-Based Educational Pilot Study.” The research examined how effectively nurses and medical students could acquire practical skills in tablet-based visual acuity and stereopsis testing following structured theoretical and practical training. Dr. Eszter Mikó-Baráth, Dr. Zsuzsanna Varga, Dr. ADr.ienne Csutak, Dr. Balázs Patczai and Dr. Vanda Ágnes Nemes also contributed to the study.
A poster presentation entitled “Personalised Nutrition in Coeliac Disease: The ARCTIC Study” was prepared by Dr. Zsófia Vereczkei, Dr. Zsolt Szakács, Dr. Míra Zsófia Peresztegi, Dr. Klára Lemes, Dr. Krisztina Hagymási, Dr. Sarolta Dakó, Dr. Eszter Dakó, Dr. Szilvia Lada, Dr. Nándor Faluhelyi, Dr. Gábor Szekeres, Dr. Gyula Pásztor, Dr. Nelli Farkas, Dr. Gabriella Pár, Dr. Emese Mezősi and Dr. Judit Bajor.
The research conducted in Pécs in the field of personalised nutrition was presented by Dr. Míra Zsófia Peresztegi, resident physician at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre. The poster introduced the prospective, randomised ARCTIC study, which investigates the potential of a personalised nutritional intervention based on the principles of the Mediterranean diet in patients with coeliac disease. Conducted at the First Department of Medicine of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre, the long-term aim of the study is to determine whether personalised dietetic care, in addition to a gluten-free diet, can help reduce patients’ metabolic risk and contribute to a more favourable body composition.
Dr. Kristóf Filipánits, President of the György Romhányi College for Advanced Studies and resident physician at the Department of Rheumatology, Immunology and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation of the University of Pécs Clinical Centre, presented a poster entitled “Student-Led Conferences as Living Laboratories for Innovation in Medical Education: The ROMCON 2026 Model.”
The international scientific conference organised by the György Romhányi College for Advanced Studies was presented as a student-centred educational ecosystem integrating scientific communication with innovation in medical education, near-peer teaching, the development of student leadership skills, international collaboration and student well-being. Dr. Míra Zsófia Peresztegi, Dr. Marcell Schmidt, Dr. Máté Szemes, Dr. Andrea Tamás and Dr. Dóra Reglődi also contributed to the scientific work.
