The Human Side of Laboratory Safety – Joint ITD–VNL Research Published in a Prestigious International Journal

The scientific output of the University of Pécs has once again been strengthened by a prestigious international publication: a study by PhD student Péter Szabó, his supervisor, József L. Szentpéteri, PhD, and their co-authors has been published in Safety Science, an Elsevier journal ranked in the D1 category.
The article, entitled The gap of psychological perspective in high-containment lab training – An exploratory systematic review and meta-analysis, highlights the fact that psychological and human factors are still insufficiently addressed in the training of high-containment laboratories, despite the fact that stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout may also affect safe and reliable laboratory operations.
The research was conducted with the professional contribution and support of the National Laboratory of Virology (VNL) at the University of Pécs, providing an excellent example of the opportunities offered by collaboration between different organisational units of the University. The cooperation between the Institute and the VNL also aligns closely with the Institute’s efforts to generate new and applicable knowledge in the field of biomedical sciences by bringing together discovery research, data-driven analyses, and practical applications.
The joint examination of psychological and human factors, together with professional experience in the operation and training of high-containment laboratories, represents a transdisciplinary approach that may, in the longer term, contribute to the development of safer and more effective practices in healthcare and research.
