Smart Dentistry 2026: international collaboration for the future of digital dentistry

The first Smart Dentistry 2026 international conference, hosted by the University of Pécs on 4 September, focused on current issues in digital dentistry and the application of artificial intelligence. Organised by the UP Clinical Centre Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the event brought together representatives of universities providing dentistry training in Pécs, Graz, Osijek, Novi Sad, and Târgu Mureș, who shared their experiences while also discussing opportunities for long-term regional professional cooperation.
“The initiative of the dentistry programme in Pécs to coordinate scientific and educational cooperation while engaging its regional international partners simultaneously is highly commendable,” said Professor András Komócsi, Dean of the UP Medical School, in his welcome address.
“Technological development is advancing at an incredible pace, and our institutions are facing similar challenges. Shaping the future of dentistry training requires joint thinking and cooperation,” emphasised Professor József Szalma, Head of the Department of Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and one of the conference’s organisers.
The conference presentations covered a wide range of topics, from the modernisation of education and digital workflows to the applicability of artificial intelligence in diagnostics and teaching. Topics included, among others, dental impression-taking based on digital scanning; real-time analysis of condylar movements using optical scanning; the educational and surgical models produced using 3D printing techniques and the evaluation of the possibilities they provide; as well as the potential of AI-based automated analysis of X-ray and CT images (e.g. the diagnosis of inflammatory bone loss around the root apex).
“Smart Dentistry is more than just a conference. It is a platform that connects our universities and creates opportunities for more active collaboration than ever before in joint research, educational projects and innovation initiatives,” highlighted Dr. Gyula Marada, senior lecturer and the conference’s other organiser.
Participants agreed that, in the fields of digital dentistry and artificial intelligence, it is necessary to reconsider educational objectives, competencies and teaching methods together. The organisers hope that Smart Dentistry will become a leading professional forum for regional cooperation in the future.
