Research by the 3D Centre at the University of Pécs Faculty of Medicine in the Hungarian space mission

Researchers from the University of Pécs are also behind the successes of Hungarian space research – including experts from the 3D Centre at the Medical School, who contributed to the experiments carried out as part of the HUNOR Programme.
A year ago, Tibor Kapu, Hungary’s second astronaut, set off for the International Space Station as a member of the Axiom-4 mission. To mark the anniversary, the HUNOR Programme has released a special video in which the astronaut personally guides viewers around the ISS.
The mission was not only a milestone for Hungarian space research, but also presented an outstanding opportunity for researchers at the University of Pécs. Several research groups from the University of Pécs took part in the HUNOR Programme, including the Medical School’s 3D Centre: the PTE–3D–ESEL3D research group investigated the behaviour of 3D-printed materials in a microgravity environment. This research may contribute to the development of even more reliable additive manufacturing technologies in the future, for both the space industry and terrestrial applications. The MagyAR (Neuromotion VR) project investigated cognitive and physiological changes occurring in space using a unique, VR-based toolkit, seeking to understand how human cognitive abilities evolve during a space mission and what neurological and other physiological processes underlie these changes. The Step in Space (SiS) programme explores the scientific and human dimensions of the HUNOR mission in a virtual reality environment, bringing the experiences of space exploration closer to a wider audience. The project can be viewed at the HUNOR Visitor Centre, HUNIVERZUM, in Budapest. Meanwhile, the Vitapric project, carried out in collaboration with the University of Debrecen, aimed to breed plants that are resistant to the challenges of space and provide excellent food sources.
We are proud that the research carried out by the 3D Centre at the Medical School, University of Pécs, has been part of this scientific mission of international significance.
