WHO Patient Safety Curriculum–based elective course held at the University of Pécs Medical School

May 12, 2026

The University of Pécs Medical School was the first among Hungary’s four medical schools to host an elective course titled “In Safe Hands: How to Prevent Errors? Fundamentals of Patient Safety” on 17–18 April. Based on the World Health Organization’s Patient Safety Curriculum, the 12-hour programme provided students with a structured introduction to the fundamentals of patient safety.

The course combined lectures with interactive small-group sessions, during which participants analysed real clinical cases and worked together to find possible solutions. As part of the programme, students also practised key aspects of safe patient care in a simulated operating theatre at the Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre. In addition, films on patient safety helped them better understand the human and system-related factors behind medical errors.

Throughout the course, students developed key competencies such as effective communication, teamwork, clinical decision-making, and the ability to recognise and manage risks. They also gained insight into strategies for preventing and handling errors in clinical practice. The initiative marks an important step towards making patient safety an integral part of Hungarian medical education.

Students completed a knowledge assessment both before and after the course, and the results showed that even this short programme helped improve their preparedness for safer clinical practice.

The following students successfully completed the course: János Mátyás Budai, Anna Horváth, Gréta Fodor, Veronika Rittmann, Lili Rózsa Szadeczky, Masood Asaad Salem, Rebeka Jázmin Fekete, Gergő Skaliczky, Lili Hanna Kovács, Petra Sájer, Klaudia Bartók, András Ódor, Bálint József Nyaka, Martin Vecseri, Gábor Ferenc Dévai.
