The delegation of the Medical School discussed the dentistry training programme of students from Saxony-Anhalt in Magdeburg

November 26, 2025

The delegation of the University of Pécs Medical School visited the Saxony-Anhalt Dentists Association (KZV Sachsen-Anhalt) in Magdeburg in November to discuss the ongoing joint cooperation, which was established nearly five years ago. As part of the cooperation, students from Saxony study dentistry in Pécs, the next period regarding new applications will be open between 1–28 February 2026.

The University of Pécs Medical School and the Saxony-Anhalt Dentists Association established their joint cooperation in January 2022, in order to provide 12 students from Saxony with the possibility to be part of the dentistry training programme, but currently 20 students get the opportunity each year to study in Pécs. Their tuition fees are paid by the local Chamber of Dentistry, in exchange students return to Saxony after graduating to practice there, so to reduce the shortage of dentists.

ZM Online reported on the visit, and also highlights that Dr. Reiner Haseloff (prime minister, CDU) and the Saxony-Anhalt Federal State also support the cooperation. The programme aims to educate young people in European countries and then they return to Germany with their knowledge gained during their training programme. The Saxony-Anhalt Dentists Association covers the tuition fees, and several counties and communities are also present with scholarships and other types of financial support.

„We recognized that the dental community should start its own initiative, if we want to sustain dental care in the state in the long term” – the newspaper quotes Dr. Jochen Schmidt, Head of the Saxony-Anhalt Dentists Association. „Our joint cooperation with the Medical School combines high-quality European education with our clear regional goal, which is to provide dental care especially in rural areas” – he added.

„Dental care is an important part of healthcare in Saxony-Anhalt” – said Dr. Reiner Haseloff, prime minister of the federal state, who paid a visit to the University of Pécs Medical School last year as the head of delegation of Saxony-Anhalt, he examined the training programme and its criteria. He noted that the training programme is a successful example of how to acquire specialists instead of just looking for them, and it also shows what can be achieved by combining an initiative with European cooperation.

The article also presents the law on dentistry adopted by the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt during the summer of 2025, which structurally strengthens the initiative and the financial background of scholarships for dental studies in Europe.
