PTE Surgical Society Successfully Holds Its First “DEEP Dive” Workshop
November 21, 2025
On November 6, 2025, the PTE Surgical Society successfully held its first “DEEP Dive” workshop, jointly organized by the Department of Anatomy of the Medical School, the Department of Surgery of the Clinical Center, the MediSkills Lab, and the Circle of Demonstrator Students ((DDK). The participants expressed great enthusiasm about their experience and are looking forward to similar practice-oriented initiatives in the future.
The aim of the “DEEP Dive” program is to create an educational environment that enables experiential, practice-based learning far beyond traditional skills training. The program was led by Dr. Caleb Ibitamuno, President of the PTE Surgical Society, with the main organizers being Thea Aleksandra Aaseth Thoresen (Director of Education), Joori Park (Social Media Manager), and Rita Varga (Director of Administration), all demonstrator students and members of both the DDK and the Surgical Society leadership.
The workshop was created to integrate essential anatomical and surgical knowledge with clinical application in a unified and practice-oriented format, drawing on the collaboration of several departments. The first topic of the “DEEP Dive” series was laparoscopic cholecystectomy, as it is one of the most common procedures performed at the beginning of surgical training. To support smooth and effective participation, students received preparatory materials and an anatomical demonstration video before the event.
The session began with a welcome by Dr. Zalán Szántó, Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery. Dr. Andrea Tamás, Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy held a lecture on the anatomy of the liver, gallbladder, and the surrounding structures. The surgical perspective was provided by Dr. Zoltán Sándor, Assistant Lecturer at the Medical Skills Education and Innovation Centre, who highlighted the critical anatomical structures necessary for orientation during laparoscopic procedures.
After the anatomy block, participants moved to the MediSkills Lab, where the training continued in two groups. One group took part in a case-based discussion on diagnostic and indication-related aspects of the procedure, led by Dr. Caleb Ibitamuno, while the other group practiced laparoscopic techniques in pairs using trainers and porcine liver models, under the supervision of Dr. Zoltán Sándor.
More than fifty students expressed interest in participating in the workshop; however, due to space and equipment limitations, the number of participants had to be restricted to thirty. The program received outstandingly positive feedback: participants reported their experiences with great enthusiasm and said they were eager for similar practice-oriented events in the future.
The success of the “DEEP Dive” workshop was made possible through the dedicated work and cooperation of all participating departments and organizers. Their joint efforts transformed an innovative idea into a valuable and inspiring educational experience for future surgeons.
