Dr. Dénes Molnár received the Nagy Lajos Király Award at the ceremonial opening of the academic year at the University of Pécs

On 1 September, at the ceremonial Senate meeting held on the Hungarian Higher Education Day, Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs, solemnly opened the 2025/26 academic year in the Dr. Halasy-Nagy József Aula. The leadership of the university awarded numerous honours to outstanding UP staff members and students this year as well.  Dr. Dénes Molnár, professor emeritus at the Clinical Center Department of Paediatrics, received the Nagy Lajos Király Award, according to pte.hu.

The article highlights that the 2025/26 academic year marks a new chapter in the life of the institution, since UP has undergone a rebranding, which was presented to the public on 1 September.

In his opening speech, Rector Dr. Attila Miseta recalled the circumstances surrounding the founding of the university and its historical past, emphasizing that over the centuries, not only the institution itself but also education, research, and learning methodologies have changed significantly. He pointed out that although innovative tools and artificial intelligence greatly facilitate and accelerate everyday learning and research, they cannot replace thinking, context-seeking, and sharp minds.

Pte.hu also quotes Mayor Attila Péterffy, who highlighted the significant historical heritage of the city and the university, adding that it is always a special feeling for him to speak at one of Europe’s oldest universities. He also mentioned the renovation of the southern park of the Medical School in Pécs, during which the walls between the university and the city were torn down, not only physically but also symbolically.

The Senate of the University of Pécs awards the Nagy Lajos Király Award to Hungarian or foreign individuals whose outstanding achievements in science, art, education, sports, public life or other fields have been recognized with national, state or international honours or awards, or who hold public office and have contributed to the development of Hungarian education, science, and culture, to increasing the international recognition of Hungarian achievements, or to the development of Hungarian higher education. In 2025, this award was presented to Dr. Dénes Molnár, professor emeritus of the UP Clinical Center Department of Paediatrics.

Dr. Dénes Molnár’s career has been characterized by his love for university students and his field of expertise, his high level of education, his extraordinary work ethic and determination, which also serve as examples for future generations of paediatricians. His research achievements in the field of paediatric nutrition and metabolism, particularly in the study of changes in lipid maintenance and fatty acid metabolism in various pathological conditions, are impressive.

The Award for University Sports Life was presented to those who have enhanced the reputation of the university through their active involvement, dedication, and outstanding achievements in sports or the organisation of sports life. The Award for University Sports Life was presented to Regina Koloh, PhD student at the UP Faculty of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacognosy, senior member of the Cholnoky College of Advanced Studies, for strengthening relations between colleges of advanced studies and for her outstanding sporting activities as a sports ambassador.

The Award for University Culture was presented to those who contributed to the university’s reputation through their active involvement, dedicated work, and outstanding artistic and cultural activities. The Award for University Culture was presented to Krisztina Fekete, a graduate of the Medical School, in recognition of her outstanding and dedicated work in recruiting students to the School and providing career guidance and mentoring to secondary school students during her undergraduate studies and throughout her PhD training; Gergő Sulyok, a graduate of the Medical School, in recognition of his active involvement since his first year as a student and his work in recruiting students at numerous faculty events; Kristóf Takler, a graduate of the Medical School, in recognition of his active involvement since his first year as a student, his student recruitment work at numerous faculty events and his active participation in short films promoting the School; Karolina Tornyos, a graduate of the Medical School, for creating, together with her fellow students, “Pothatlon” a health-themed professional competition that combines knowledge dissemination and health promotion in a novel way, as well as for her active role in contributing to forming the health-conscious attitude of the School’s students and staff, as well as high school students; Boglárka Zsuzsa Tóth, a graduate of the Medical School, for creating, together with her fellow students, “Pothatlon” a health-themed professional competition, and for her active role in contributing to forming the health-conscious attitude of the School’s students and staff, as well as high school students; Szilárd Tóth, a graduate of the Medical School, in recognition of his outstanding and dedicated recruitment and career guidance and mentoring activities for secondary school students during his undergraduate studies and throughout his PhD programme; Máté Verbói, a graduate of the Medical School, in recognition of his active involvement at the School and his dedicated work in recruitment and career guidance and mentoring activities for secondary school students.
