„Repeat it: you made the right decision!” – Opening Ceremony of the New Academic Year at the Medical School and Faculty of Pharmacy in Pécs

September 1, 2025

The Opening Ceremony of the New Academic Year of the University of Pécs Medical School and Faculty of Pharmacy was held on 31 August this year in the Dr. Romhányi György Aula.

„You will learn a huge amount of curriculum during these six years and then you will forget it, but you will remember the important things, so medical knowledge will come from these. The most important skill you will gain is to learn how to study when you are tired, and to be able to rest when you study. It is important that you repeat to yourself every day: you made the right decision!” – said in his welcoming speech Dr. András Komócsi, Professor, Vice-Rector for Science of the University of Pécs.

The Chairs of the English and German Programme Committees, Professors Ferenc Gallyas and Péter Than also welcomed the first-year students.

„Ask senior students during your studies, as they are able to give you a lot of useful advice! These years spent here provide a great opportunity for making friendships! The English programme is a particularly good opportunity for this, because it is diverse, almost all the students come from different countries. Overall, I recommend that you try to enjoy these five or six years you spend here as much as possible!” – listed his pieces of advice Dr. Ferenc Gallyas.

Dr. Péter Than pointed out in his speech that students face a great challenge, as they have to perform far from their homes and families. However, they will not be alone during the hard time: the cohesive community of German students and new friendships will mean strength in order to overcome the difficulties. He also believes that balancing between learning and having fun is important, essential to be successful and have a good time at the Medical School in Pécs.

Based on the decision of the leadership, starting 2023, as a new tradition, former students of our Faculty, the University of Pécs Medical School are invited to give motivational speeches at the opening ceremony of the academic year. This year Dr. Péter Kupó cardiologist, senior lecturer at the Heart Institute, Leader of the Electrophysiology Lab we asked to give a speech. He performs hundreds of catheter ablation procedures for cardiac arrhythmias every year. He expanded his knowledge on study trips in Hamburg, Bordeaux and Rotterdam.

„There will be moments that you will never forget: the first time you hear a patient say thank you, the first time you truly understand the weight of a diagnosis, or the first time you feel that you really matter. The university not only provided me with training, but it also created a community, set up role models, and showed me a profession that I am still passionate about today. I hope you find the field that you are willing to get up in the middle of the night for!” emphasized Dr. Péter Kupó.

„If you love what you do, you will get better at it without even acknowledging it, your success will increase, and you will suddenly realize that you work even when you should not. I wish you to find your joy in learning!” – said Dr. András Fittler, Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, in his welcoming speech.
