“Not only the destination, but the journey matters too”

July 2, 2025

Lots of challenges, learning, struggles, true friendships, unforgettable moments – the graduating students at the Medical School in Pécs, who received their diplomas on 28 June, not only gained knowledge and skills essential for their profession during the years they spent here, but also sincere human relationships. Freshly graduated doctors told us how they look back on their years at the University of Pécs and how they see their future.

On the last Saturday of June, the graduating students at the UP Medical School were celebrated in the prestigious Dr. Romhányi György aula. A total of 278 students received their diplomas, 142 of them graduated from the Hungarian, 92 from the English, and 44 from the German programmes.

Alexandra Tóth, who is starting her career as an obstetrician-gynaecologist resident in Sopron, was among those who wore the gown.

“First of all, I still cannot believe that university is over. I am both relieved and happy. These six years have given me a lot: knowledge, challenges, and unforgettable moments. I have been through tough exams and final exams, but I feel that these have also shaped my personality. I consider myself lucky to have found true friends alongside my studies who have always been supportive. I owe all this to the Medical School in Pécs,” she said. She said that her main goal is to become a trustworthy doctor, loved by his patients, whom they will choose with confidence and pleasure.

“I experienced university as one of the most decisive periods of my life. There were some difficult moments, but overall, they were some of my most beautiful years. I have learnt an enormous amount about medicine and about myself - how to cope, grow, and adapt. In addition to learning, I have had many other opportunities that shaped me to become a doctor over the years: participating in scientific research, mentoring programmes, teaching as a demonstrator, and working in the Mediskills lab. These activities have been particularly rewarding for me and I am grateful to my teachers, mentors, and supervisors for supporting me on this journey,” – these are the thoughts of Máté Verbói, who is starting his residency at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the UP Clinical Centre.

He added that he not only gained professional knowledge and experience at the university, but also friendships and experiences that have accompanied him along this long journey. These are memories he will always happily look back on.

Kristóf Takler also graduated from the Medical School in Pécs on 28 June. Besides his studies, he was also actively involved in the life of the School: he was a member of the Pécs Medical Students' Organisation (POE), represented the School as a sportsman at the Medical Cup, and participated in internships abroad.

“I believe that this degree has given us a license to practice one of the most beautiful and noble professions in the world: helping and healing. I believe that not only the destination, but the journey matters too. It has been a pleasure for me to be connected to university life in more ways than one. I have learned a lot about myself, and I am proud to have reached the most significant milestone of this journey. The most important thing for me has always been to collect lifelong memories that I can look back on with joy and laughter. It was an honour to be a student at the UPMS,” he added. He will continue his medical career at the UP Clinical Centre Department of Paediatrics as a paediatric resident.

“Now that we are doctors, I think more and more about how the walls of the university used to provide us with safety, but now we are facing real life, full of new challenges. This gives me mixed feelings: fear, excitement, and a longing for the unknown. I will take the perseverance and diligence I learned at the Medical School in Pécs to my work. I would like to heal, continuously improve, and give back what I got from the university,” shared Odett Kurucz, who is starting her career as an obstetrician-gynaecologist resident in Kaposvár.

She said that although she had faced many difficulties over the past six years, the joy of graduating was like nothing else. She believes that graduation is not only the end of an era, but also a new beginning - one that she can now embark on as a resident doctor.
