- winning research at the National Undergraduate Research Conference by Míra Peresztegi

Míra Zsófia Peresztegi, a sixth-year medical student at the University of Pécs Medical School, finished first place at the National Undergraduate Research Conference with her research titled „Steatosis hepatis in coeliac disease”, in which she was studying the connection between fatty liver disease and gluten intolerance. The interview with UnivPécs presents the difficulties she went through during her research, as well as the path that led to her success.

„I am researching the cardiovascular risk factors of coeliac disease, and since this is a large-scale survey and rich in data, we only presented a small segment of it at the conference, which was the appearance of fatty liver disease among people with coeliac disease. It is known that they have a high risk of cardiovascular diseases, but the components are not obvious yet, whether the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases due to coeliac disease itself or obesity, which is a characteristic of the population. The average age of the studied group is 35 years, since fatty liver disease is already common at this age” - she said.

Míra Peresztegi added that the research covers three main centres: Pécs, Szeged and Budapest. Selecting patients continuously is important so as to increase the number of newly diagnosed patients and balance the data.

In connection with her results achieved at the conference, she said that her success proves her perseverance, because participating in this competition was not the first time for her.

Responding to a question from UnivPécs, she highlighted that it would be important to educate people having coeliac disease in order to prevent cardiovascular diseases. She also added that in addition to weight management, following the gluten-free Mediterranean diet would be also important for patients.
