Nearly 11,000 square meters of green space have been renewed in the southern park of the Medical School in Pécs

May 19, 2025

The southern park of the University of Pécs Medical School has undergone a complete renovation, covering nearly 11,000 square meters. The renewed area was officially inaugurated on May 19, 2025, during a festive ceremony held alongside a spring fair.

The project, which began in the spring of 2024 and was carried out in three phases, was fully funded by the university with a total investment of HUF 927 million. As part of the development, the fence along Szigeti Road that bordered the campus was removed, the on-site parking lot was relocated, and the green spaces were completely revitalized. The renewed areas are not only visually appealing but also functional, providing spaces for studying, relaxing between classes, reading, or simply enjoying a stroll.

A new, elegant pedestrian promenade now runs through a leafy park leading to the Medical School. The area features durable stone paving and borders that are designed to age aesthetically, harmonizing with the historic character and spirit of the old theoretical building of the faculty. Additionally, the park is enhanced by a unique parapet wall that bears the inscription “Medical School University of Pécs.”

“This marks another significant and visible milestone in the renewal of our Szigeti Road campus. This park serves our staff, faculty members, and students alike. I hope everyone will enjoy this new space and will treat it with care,” said Dr. Attila Miseta, rector of the University of Pécs, during his opening speech.

Next, Dr. Ders Csaba, head of planning of the UP, addressed the attendees. He emphasized that the park’s renovation is a deliberate step in the Medical School’s development, aimed at opening its public spaces toward the city. The result is an inspiring and functional environment that serves both the academic community and the residents of Pécs.

"Our built environment has a profound impact on how we feel in our daily lives. In a world filled with tension, anger, unspoken concerns, and impatience, our surroundings can greatly enhance our sense of well-being," said university chaplain Tamás Gergely Forrai P. SJ, who then blessed the park.

Following the speeches, Dr. Attila Miseta, rector, István Decsi, chancellor, Gábor Zag, deputy mayor of Pécs, Dr. Csaba Ders, head of planning of UP, along with Balázs Takáts, Liliana Sophie Rode, and Elsebaey Mostafa Mohamed, the presidents of the English, German, and Hungarian Student Councils, ceremoniously cut the ribbon.

"The journey that brought us to this moment started nearly three years ago. Our daily goal is to create an environment where everyone who studies or works here can come with joy and pride. A crucial aspect of this is our built enviroment and infrastructure," stated Dr. Miklós Nyitrai, dean of the Medical School, following the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He expressed his gratitude for everyone's hard work, patience, and support, and wished everyone much joy in using the renovated park.
