„It is crucial that they can present their results to the scientific community”

Nearly 600 presentations were evaluated by the professional jury during the 37th National Student Research Conference (OTDK) in the Medical and Health Sciences section, held from April 22 to 25. This year’s event was hosted by the Medical School and Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Pécs. In addition to the awards for the best presentations in each section, the Pro Scientia Hope Badge and a special award from the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates (DOSZ) were also presented. The ceremonial closing included the symbolic handover of the baton to the next host institution, the University of Debrecen.

The scientific competition of Hungarian higher education commenced on April 22 with participant registration and a jury briefing. The official opening ceremony took place on Wednesday morning, following a press conference. As part of the welcoming program, Dr. Ádám Schlégl, an orthopedic surgeon at the Clinical Centre of the University of Pécs and research specialist for the HUNOR (Hungarian Astronaut Programme), delivered a presentation titled "Hungarian Life Sciences Return to Space". He was followed by Dr. Barbara Fülöp, this year’s recipient of the OTDK Roska Tamás Award, who presented the results of her research.

Over the following days, the five-member professional jury attended presentations eld across 79 thematic sections. Wednesday concluded with a ceremonial reception, while Thursday’s program featured an OTDK afterparty at the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter.

Friday’s awards ceremony opened with a speech by Dr. Attila Miseta, Rector of the University of Pécs. He expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to the event’s success, warmly welcomed the participants, and shared his hope that everyone had a meaningful and memorable experience. Dr. Miseta described the OTDK as a valuable platform for both researchers and practicing medical professionals. "It is crucial that they not only carry out their work but also present their results to the scientific community." he remarked. "They must convince others that their efforts are meaningful and contribute to human development."

Following the Rector’s speech, awards were presented to the best presenters in each section. The Pro Scientia Hope Badge was bestowed upon Marcell Kákonyi, a student from Semmelweis University, by Dr. Gábor Tóth, a representative of the Pro Scientia Golden Medalists Society. Additionally, the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates (DOSZ) presented a special award to Máté Kisgyörgyi, a student at the University of Debrecen This award, which aims to recognize and encourage exceptional young researchers to continue their doctoral studies, was presented by Dr. Patrik Kreuter and Katalin Dinnyés, representatives of DOSZ.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the baton was symbolically handed over to the University of Debrecen, the future host of the 2027 OTDK Medical and Health Sciences Section. In his closing remarks, Dr. László Mátyus, professor and dean of the Faculty of Medicine University of Debrecen, as well as vice president of the National Association for Student Research (OTDT), expressed his gratitude to all those involved in organizing the event. He acknowledged that the University of Pécs had set a high benchmark for the upcoming competition.
