The women’s handball team of the Pécs Medical School is the undefeated champion at the World InterUniversities Championship
November 13, 2024
Three Medical Cup teams represented the Pécs Medical School at the World InterUniversities Championship held in Rome between 6 and 10 November 2024. The women’s handball team was the undefeated champion, but the men’s handball and volleyball teams were also successful.
The Medical Cup Committee helped the winning teams participate in this international sporting event as a reward, to improve the quality of their preparation for the 2025 Medical Cup, and as an excellent opportunity for community building within the team. At the World InterUniversities Championship, which took place between 6 and 10 November in Rome, the Pécs Medical School was represented by three Medical Cup teams: the women’s and men’s handball teams and the men’s volleyball team.
The women’s handball team, coached by Kornél Vajda, was undefeated, beating four French, one Swedish, one English, one Slovakian, and one German university. They represented the University of Pécs in a worthy manner and earned the recognition of the organisers and participants with this result.
The men’s handball team also did well, advancing from their group to play for a place in the best four of the 16-team tournament. Here, they lost to last year’s champions and finished in the 5-8th place, in the top half of the field, out of ten teams from France, two from Switzerland, one from Germany, one from Serbia, and one from England. Their coach was Zoltán Lipcsik.
In a very strong field of 32 teams, the men’s volleyball team failed to qualify for the knockout stage with one win and two defeats in their group, but their performance was splendid regardless.
As no water polo event has been announced by the organising body, the water polo team that finished in first place in the Medical Cup will compete at other venues abroad.
In 2025, the same competition will be held in Barcelona. The Medical Cup Committee will also support the participation of any team winning the first place in next year’s Medical Cup.
